Latest project: the Ovaute.

What to do with an old Applause Ovation 6-string with a godawful aluminum/resin neck and a plywood top? Rebuild it into a lute, or vihuela, of course!

I started by removing the plywood soundboard. Most luthiers that do repair work will tell you they hate Ovations. I can see why. Ovation uses all sorts of epoxies and other "space-age polymers" to glue their guitars together so taking them apart is not pretty. As I wasn't planning on saving the soundboard, I didn't care. I wore a…

Preparations and problems

Bad news. Being military, we move around pretty frequently and my dad plans on retiring this year so we are moving for the final time and I have to put off the Renaissance guitar project. I went scouring the internet for a smaller and easier project and I decided to attempt the Pochette violin. Seems pretty simple so it should be done when I get the schedule fixed.

Finished plans

I just now finished drawing the plan for the belly of the Renaissance guitar.  While I was in class learning about proportions, I decided to use proportions on the Guillaume Morlaye cover picture. I used the sting length of a renaissance guitar now owned by Akira Skamoto of this forum and divided that by the string length in the picture and that was the scale factor. I's trying to get my dad to get me spruce from Old World Tonewoods And when I get the wood I'll get right to work. I might…

LuthierBuilt marks 6 months online by helping musicians find musical instrument artisans in 26 countries

One of the up-front objectives for LuthierBuilt is for it to become a truly international venue, as opposed to one focused on a single country or region. The goal is to help musicians and artisans connect in all countries where English is a commonly-spoken language. Only 6-plus months into being online, the site is well on its way to meeting this objective.

See the newsletter article for the list of countries, and for… Continue

“FASZINATION GITARRE” 23 September 2010 to 30 January 2011 Music Museum, Berlin.

More didactic than “Travelling Guitars”, the 2006 exhibition in Paris (with a bit of everything) and less refined than  "Guitars: 4 Centuries of Masterpieces” held in Alessandria (Italy) in 2008, the exhibition “Fascination Guitare” was held for 4 months in Berlin.  We thought a review of such a…

DEDILLO

Hello all! I'm working on the dedillo technique and wondered if any of you know of anywhere online where dedillo is discussed besides Ralph Maier's excellent page? or have any advice themselves? any ideas/thoughts are welcome. Also anyone know of recordings where it can be heard (I think I hear it on Jacob Herinmang's and Katherine King's 'el maestro' disk.)

vihuela sheet music

Hi Waling,

my name is André, I'm Dutch like you, and I'm new to this group. I only joined yesterday (also joined the Lute group), I never knew these groups existed! I'm sure I'll be a very regular visitor here, it seems like a wonderful community.

You asked Rob if he had sheet music (French tablature) of Fuenllana's Duo after Josquin's Fecit Potentiam, which he didn't. I added a comment to the same thread, but as I'm not sure whether you'll read it, I decided to write to… Continue

Libro de diferentes cifras, 1705

My edition of the "Libro de diferentes cifras", ms. M 811 in the Biblioteca Nacional de Madrid, is finally in print. It contains 109 pieces for baroque guitar, mostly in Italian tablature and a few in alphabeto. The authors are Gaspar Sanz (from his Instruccion , sometimes in new or arranged versions), Francesco Corbetta and some pieces that could be atributed to Santiago de Murcia, and a lot of unatributed pieces.

Since the rythm in the manuscript is not precisely written, my work… Continue
