Early Guitars and Vihuela

A network for historic guitars and vihuelas

Hi Waling,

my name is André, I'm Dutch like you, and I'm new to this group. I only joined yesterday (also joined the Lute group), I never knew these groups existed! I'm sure I'll be a very regular visitor here, it seems like a wonderful community.

You asked Rob if he had sheet music (French tablature) of Fuenllana's Duo after Josquin's Fecit Potentiam, which he didn't. I added a comment to the same thread, but as I'm not sure whether you'll read it, I decided to write to you on your page. I didn't see any e-mail address, maybe I just don't know here to look yet (all this is still new to me), anyway, here's what I wrote:

if you're still looking for this piece in French tab, you can find most of Fuenllana's works (including this one) on Serge Gerbode's website, at

http://www.gerbode.net/ft2/composers/Fuenllana/

Josquin's duo is in book I, number 8 (available in pdf, fronimo and tab)

Browse through the files, and you'll find a lot of vihuela and lute music by other composers as well. Not too much by Narvaez though, unfortunately ...

One of my favorite pieces on Serge's website: Phrygian Fantasia by good old Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck, wonderful music which I imagine must sound really nice when played on vihuela (I can't tell for sure though, for lack of money I make do with a 1/2 size classical guitar in lute tuning) - why not try it !

hello Waling,

Just to make sure you are using the right version: Rob pointed out on www.vihuela.eu/study that the file on Sarge Gerbode's website contains an error in bar 6. You can find the corrected version on the page I mentioned.
I've no idea whether I'm any good at woodworking - simply because I never tried it. But I've often said to myself: if I could start my life all over again, I would become a professional builder of musical instruments (probably harpsichords or lutes). At age 47, it's a bit late now ...

Hi André,

I already found the Josquin at Sarge Gerbode's website.
About getting a vihuela and money - or the lack of it: If you're good at woodworking you can always try to build one yourself! When I started on my renaissance guitar I never guessed it would be this succesfull and fulfilling. I gained a hobby (with lack of time as a result)
