Hi Wolfgang, I still play Peter Forrester's 54 cm renaissance guitar, as he mentions in the previous reply (it is a wonderful instrument). As I also have large hands, this works very well for me, and as a player of the renaissance lute (59 cm) an...

Hello Valéry, That would have been one of the first I made and sold. Donald Gill had made one for himself which I saw and liked, but thought that the Morlaye picture looked as though the back might be rounded and that this would perhaps project be...

Hello Peter, the first renaissance guitar I played was one you made for Betho Davezac, what an experience to play Morlaye on the original instrument (I was just a lute begginer at that time: early 80') Valéry

thanks all for your advices. So I have to choose. my hands are very large, the span between thumb and index-tip is 22cm, between index and little finger 18cm. but I feel very comfortable with my tenor-uke and its 43cm.... most of the r-guitar I sa...

When I started making 4 course guitars (around 1970) I used a top string at g" and a string length of 54 cm. This was then regarded as an appropriate, breakage-wise, combination for gut at A - 440. Later I learnt that an a" was more appropriate an...

Yes, but tuning with what string material and at what pitch standard? Gut suggests a much smaller mensur. Also, because the ren guitar does not have really low bass notes, one can get away with tuning the top course at a lower pitch than would be...

52cm seems slightly on the short side... I suppose it depends on what gauge strings you use, and at what tension, but mine is 56cm with 1st course tuned to A - 52cm might suggest a higher pitch.

Mine is 55cm. No problems. V.

chanson "la seraphine" morlaye 1552

hi,
this weekend I found this weird piece in morlaye´s book. it seems to me a little bit out of time. I didn´t found a record or more information. brown gives no concordance.
- the embellishments are tricky.

I have also tried using a ukulele as an alternative to a renaissance guitar. I just don't can't afford the real thing. I've been using Google to hunt for manuscripts. How did you find these pieces? They're beautiful.
