Early Guitars and Vihuela

A network for historic guitars and vihuelas

Has anyone got a copy of Coste's version of Sor's Method? Ideally I would like a PDF or photocopy, but failing that, can anyone review it? Has he added his own music? Added Sor's music with his own fingering? The original Method contains very little music, so I'm wondering if Coste kept it that way, or changed it to suit his own playing. He was a pupil of Sor, but clearly had his own ideas as well.

I look forward to hearing the forthcoming MP3s  :oD

So do I. Pity I don't have a 19th-century guitar ;-)

Come on, Lars!

Very interesting Rob and I think well pointing the 'classical' roots of Sor's music.  Incidentally, this echoes the debate which some period violinists have been having for a few years: how to play the violin in works of Schumann, Berlioz, et al and even Beethoven. There is thus a bit of a move now away from the 'classical' early music violin technique to include things like glissandi, swoops and the like (but still selective vibrato).  Clive Brown (Prof at Leeds) has written noteably on this (following from Stowell) eg  ' Bowing Styles, Vibrato and Portamento in Nineteenth-century Violin Playing', ...   but many fiddlers still adopt an all-purpose 'early violin' technique.

Interesting. I guess we must remember that the 19th century was a LONG century, musically speaking, arguably dating from the 1780s to 1910s, and fashions were changing constantly. So we shouldn't paint it all with one brush stroke. Of course, it is not so long ago we viewed Sor through Segovia's filter, so it has been instructive restoring Sor's possibly more lute-like technique (to simplify a complex issue) and discover his works anew. I'm not advocating going back to Segovia's approach, but I was surprised at how quickly that approached was introduced, and by one of Sor's own students. Mind you, my students never do what I tell them either. LOL!
