Early Guitars and Vihuela

A network for historic guitars and vihuelas

My little duo (voice/guitar) read through a short and easy but very pleasant piece by D. Joly (found on Boijes). Does anyone know anything about this person and if he/she published any more songs?

I recall reading some place that he (Joly) is french, but I could be wrong. I have a book though on sweedish, sying that in 1822 he published a method. But it dosent say where he lived.

Hi Scot

Can you attach the piece or a link to it?

Here are all the pieces I've found by Joly. They can be found at IMSPL as well. I'm not sure I'd consider him a "great" composer but we mix our programs up with a variety of pieces, some challenging some not so much. It would be nice to have a small group (3 -4) of his songs in our repertoire.

Scot, there is a mention of a D. Joly from France in Stenstadvolds 'Annotated Bibliography of Guitar Methods'. This Joly dies after 1820. He wrote a guitar method that was first published in 1819, which contains six songs. It is in the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris. There are later editions as well.

Thanks Jelma and Lars. That's certainly more than I knew about him yesterday. I'll have to see if I can locate a copy of his method...maybe my friend Matanya O. has a copy in his collection.

Hi Scot, I have ordered prints of other items from the Bibliothèque Nationale in the past. It takes some time, money and patience but it can be done :-)
