Early Guitars and Vihuela

A network for historic guitars and vihuelas

Here's a scan of a photo (not a particularly good one at that) of my 19th century style suit with frock coat, Chinese brocade vest, silk tye and super puffy sleeved shirt...although you cannot see that because of the jacket.

My wife (a tailor) made it from a museum pattern after an original mid 19th century suit in Vienna.

Lars had asked me to post a photo over a year back and with his new photos it reminded me. It's not a good photo, it's one of those that wedding photographers in Rome take as the guests are arriving at the wedding and sell outside after but...

The collar actually stands up, fitting under the jaw and chin but it was a really hot day in Rome and I was trying to catch a little air. Anyways, it looks better with a couple Stauffers or Lacotes under each arm.

Although it's tailored very well I have gained a lot of respect for Giuliani, Sor, Aguado and the rest playing all the time in one of these things...;)

are the pants 19th century as well. Nice by the way.

Yes, the pants are from the same original pattern. They have a nice pinstripe to them, low cut with a "V" in the back so it feels like you have what we call "plumbers butt" all the time (it feels like people can see the crack of your...well, you know), and held up with suspenders. It takes a bit to get used to  all the different parts.

My wifes family have been in the fabric business in Hong Kong for many decades so she was able to get some wool fabric that has a very similar weave and weight to the 19th century material in the original suit so that was an eye opener. It's hot and heavy and like I said I really respect those old guys for playing in this kind of suit and not passing out...they were tough back then.

I wish my wife was a tailor as well. Think of all the nice clothes she could make.

Very handsome :-)

Very smart and very stylish, warm to wear but, now and then you have to suffer for your art, certainly looks great.

Lookin' good, Scot. That reminds me of my wedding suit - also 19th Century. I ordered it online from a company in California that makes historical recreations for the film industry. I paid more for it than my wife did for her dress, which she also ordered online from a small company in China that makes wedding dresses built to order. She's also Asian.

Very nice! I have the top hat as well but for the Rome wedding, I was already better dressed than the groom so thought I'd best not push it....

Yeah I decided against wearing this suit at a friend's wedding for exactly the same reason. Formal wear was really formal once upon a time. Now suits and tuxedos are pretty much cookie cutter unless you go real big bucks, and even then the style's are pretty much the same.
