Probably the first work of this type composed in Latin America. The composer was an extremely talented and prolific guitarist, who was a Chapel Master in Arequipa (his home town) and Sucre (the cultural and administrative capital of Bolivia). He composed more than 50 sinfonies, 20 string quartets, 47 masses, motets, songs, Divertimenti (similar to this work), and over 200 works for guitar, including at least one more Divertimento (op.59) featuring the guitar, and 3 duets for violoncello and guitar.
