try playing some Mertz. He also used 8 strings.

Thanks. But why is it a surprise to enjoy the sound of no nails? That was very common for hundreds of years, including the 19th century. The opposite - enjoying nail playing - would be the surprise for me :-)

The gut first string broke, and is replaced with a nylgut equivalent. Not quite got the right strings for this guitar yet, but we're working on it. Currently La Bella Antique set - not my favourite, but will do while I'm getting to know the instrument.

Coste wrote some very nice studies, but I must try something Viennese next.
