I should have been more clear...it's not protection from the outside that I found an issue (those wood cases are sturdt!) it's the way the guitars fits into the case. There are "pressure points" or points where the guitar touches the case that cause wear marks after a while.

Unlike a modern case where the guitar is supported all around the sides and back, the period cases weren't usually form fitting so the widest point of the upper and lower bouts and the center of the back touch the case and a few other small points along the sides.  I tried extra padding but if one uses the authentic material then the weight goes up quite a bit...horse hair gets heavy!

Maybe the old time guitarists were stronger than we are today and didn't mind the weight...maybe they didn't know any better. However, with modern light weight materials I'm sure an acceptable "copy" could be made if someone can be found to do it.

I have to agree with you Lars...the whole authentic kit would look stylish for sure.

I must admit that I myself have my doubts regarding this case.  Sometimes I just have this inner fight with  my perfectionism -Fully equiped with the 19th century - the guitar, the notestands, the clothing all thats missing is the 19th century guitarcase. But since I'm not skizofrenic (yet) I'm able to control my perfectionism and keep it in a short leash ;-) and accept the fact that you guys are right. It looks heavy and not protective enough. Another thing, it's quiet expensive so I would only be able to by it that day I have loads of money wich is still yet to come.

Is that a fretless banjo in the right-hand corner?

I have seen a couple original early 19th century cases, almost identical to the pictured one and I agree with Rob...they are relatively heavy. The originals were made from solid pine/spruce, padded with horse hair (sometimes felted horse hair which is quite hard) and lined with a rather rough velour type material.

For a while I replicated them for my period guitars. I wasn't completely satisfied with the weight nor how well they protected the guitar so changed to Kingham and a couple others for cases. I feel much better sending my instruments off in one of those than the original copies.

You might ask Kingham, Victor Vorko or one of the other case makers if they would consider making one that "looked" like an original but with the protection of the modern case. But as with most special orders, price might be prohibitive.

Looks heavy...I wouldn't put my most expensive guitar in there. But I can see how it fits in with your period costume, etc.
