Its a painting by the danish 19th c painter, Wilhelm Bendz.

I think the action at the table is a combination of parlor magic and scientific hobby.  This is a great picture of the halcyon days before THE MEDIA provided for all our entertainment needs.  Didn't people long ago get together to do remarkable things such as enact scenes from plays, read aloud (gasp!), draft manifestos, and even play music?  I think I saw a TV special about that once...

 

Note the cellist, and is that another guitar standing on the floor to his right?

What is going on in this painting? What is causing the blaze of light? Lars is worried it will dry out his gut strings. Some of those pipes are REALLY long! And what is the guy front right doing? Cleaning out his pipe? 

Seems to be a Gentleman's Smoking Club, with some musicians. The big question is, what are they smoking?
