I wonder if whoever made the woodcut got it the wrong way round.   It's a rather crude illustration.  It may be my imagination but - depending on the way you hold the book - it looks as if the peg box is angled towards the soundboard rather than the back of the instrument.  Not in the reproduction though.  A bit like these paintings where people's eyes seem to be following you around the room.
