Early Guitars and Vihuela

A network for historic guitars and vihuelas

An ex colleague of mine who knows I play guitar & lute, sent me some photos of a guitar and asked if I knew anything about it. There is no label and no writing that is visible. It obviously needs some restoration work doing on it. Can anyone help with any sort of identification?

Thanks.

It was made in London around 1810. Probably by Longman, or some such company (but not Preston).

Hi James, thanks for the quick reply. I'll pass this on. I don't know what he is going to do with the guitar. Presumably it would be worth restoring although I don't know how it would play. The body joins the neck at the 10th fret which would make higher positions more difficult & I can see that the strings attach lute style with no saddle.

Thanks again.
