- About me:
- Liamna Pestana Roche: Originally from Ciego de Ávila, Cuba, Liamna plays a variety of plucked stringed instruments, the majority of them closely associated with the guitar. These include Renaissance and Baroque guitar, classical guitar, medieval citole, lute, oud, archlute, Cuban tres, and Anglo-Saxon lyre. She is also a soprano and has been a member of various vocal and instrumental groups in Cuba, Mexico, Argentina and the US. Liamna formed and directed for ten years the early music group Cantiga Armonica, with which she performed in concerts and festivals in Cuba, Mexico, Sweden, Argentina and Colombia. She is also a concert guitarist and as a soloist has won prizes and awards in guitar festivals and competitions in Mexico and Cuba. In the area of early music, she has participated in workshops in instrumental interpretation and musical notation from the Middle Ages to the XVIII century. She has given lectures on the evolution of the guitar and lute and conference presentations such as: Poetry and music in the children’s songbook (Autonomous University of Mexico, 2009). She published articles on Novo Hispanic Musicology in the Heraldo de Navidad (Queretaro, Mexico 2012). She has recorded several CDs with different groups such as Segrel (The Sounds of the Medieval Lyric, 2009 and Un Sarao en Chalco, 2012); Cantiga Armonica (Fantasia, 2006 and Play the Rebec, 2012), among others. Currently, Liamna lives in the USA, in Syracuse, NY, where she performs in concerts with the choral early-music group Schola Cantorum of Syracuse, both as vocalist and instrumentalist. She has performed concerts at La Casita Cultural Center, Grupo Axa, The Corinthian Club, Canton University, LeMoyne College and Setnor School of Music at Syracuse University, among others.
