About me:
Not a new member! I simply messed up trying to change my email address. As a result, my former self has had to be banned, while the newer version of me is what you now get. Apologies to those who were friends of the old me - I'd of course welcome them once more.
As the duetting picture suggests, I was finally forced out of the beginners' class at the Lute Society weekend at Whitby this September.

Hi Alan,

Thanks for your messages and info. about the viola da mano. I immediately recognized your instrument as coming from the Barber and Harris workshop, whose Website I have not visited in ages. The other instrument depicted in your duet is from Alexander Batov, if I am not mistaken. BTW, my orpharion is a Rose model -- originally a modified 1580 bandora without the fanned frets. I am sure that your knowledge of and affection for the viola da mano will enrich this site. Once again, welcome.

Regards,

Marc

Hello Alan,

Welcome to the Ning group. I'm sure you'll have many valuable contributions to make in days to come, especially since you play the viola da mano. I own a fine vihuela de mano, but I'll be the first to admit that I know little about its Italian cousin. That said, I would be keen to listen to any performances you might care to post. How would you compare the tonal properties of the viola da mano to the vihuela? Are the two instruments all but interchangeable or are there subtle differences? Are there any CD recordings of solo viola da mano?

Regards,

Marc Alexander
