Thanks Stuart! That's very helpful. I am also curious about the Machete MS belonging to Mrs Christopher...

I put up a slightly mischievous version of this a while ago:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jP4I4vW2dW4&list=PLsataS2yHaRG9...

and wrongly said it was from Barbosa's Principios para machete (from 1870s not 1840s)

Some original scans from the Cabral MS, and some other scans from other Madeiran MSS plus many, many pieces written out from the MSS are here:

This site is in Portuguese. It is not easy to navigate and doesn't seem to be working at the moment. It took me a while to figure it out  - so please feel free to contact me if I can help. It must be the most important site for machete music.

Does anyone know what happened to the Cabral MS?

It's probably just a coincidence but this is like the Russian guitar tuning but just the top four strings. It's a nice tuning and the Russians developed it massively.

I have a curious nineteenth century guitar piece, a Military Divertimento, by Eulenstein and published in Bath in this G major tuning (but normal six-string guitar)

Is the Machete madeirense like a Canarian timple?

'Madeirense' sounds a bit like Madiera? Might the music have been written for some English people living there?

Abrazo
