BASTIEN and PACHEREL
François Bastien (1786-ca. 1850), who
made various musical instruments including
“serinettes”, and Pierre Pacherel (1803-1871)
luthier, like many others left Mirecourt to settle in
Nice; in 1814, Nice was annexed to Piedmont,
before becoming French again in 1860.
Pacherel collaborated with Pressenda in Turin,
spending some time in Genoa, then returning
to Nice where he worked until the end of his
life. Like his Italian colleagues, he mostly made
violins, but also some nice guitars. These were
greatly influenced by Gaetano II Gardagnini
of Turin, whereas those of Bastien remained
collecfaithful
to the model of Gaetano II’s father:
Carlo Guadagnini.
At this point, we must remember that the
professional lives of Mirecourt musical
instrument makers, and indeed those of makers
throughout the Vosges region, revolved mainly
around the workshops and factories. The
Parisian and European musical instrument
makers and dealers bought in supplies directly
from Mirecourt, from sellers who effectively
became wholesalers, cutting the luthiers out of
the trade circuit. It was these intermediates who
gave individual makers the instructions they had
collected from musicians and instrumentalists;
the latter never came into direct contact with the
Mirecourt workers.
