Early Guitars and Vihuela

A network for historic guitars and vihuelas

Anon. (possibly Hans Jordan) German vihuela, ca. 1970/rebuilt by Chad Neal, 2009: Along with the fingerboard, the maple back and sides are the only aspects left of the original. The back was/is quite attractive in strips of highly figured maple. Each joint was lined with cloth. The ends of the ribs were plagued with seam separations at the edges of both the upper and lower bouts. The heel was dovetailed to the headblock, but the headblock had a sloppily assembled wall of spruce, a weird softwood box, built around it! The neck was rather short and the odd, straight pegbox obscenely long.
