Early Guitars and Vihuela

A network for historic guitars and vihuelas

Since my normal supplier of gut strings has been a little "iffy" these days, I'm hoping to compile a list of the various gut string makers for present and future reference. If anyone would care to promote their favorite I'd greatly appreciate it.

Especially you folks in Europe. As well as the bigger companies there must be some small Mom/Pop - one person operations around that make a good product.

I'll start with one fellow in my neighbourhood that makes an excellent string. Many of you may already be familiar with his work.

Best price by far that I have found is from this guy in California;

I have a set for my 6 course vihuela that I paid a little over $50 for. It seems to me the price was within a dollar of nylgut. I have to preface this by stating I haven't tried them yet, however. I have been saving them to record with when I get to the point that I can play anything worth recording!

His strings are excellent, but I have heard he has stopped making them, but does have stock.

Although I live in Japan, I always use Bernd Kuerschner in Germany:

He makes quality gut strings.

I love Nicholas Baldock's gut strings: http://www.baldock.de . The website is not very informative, but I just e-mail him with my order.

Am I missing something? All I see is one page with an address and a few phone numbers.

No, that's it. I suppose Nicholas Baldock does not advertise or something. He's a musician and a one man company. But the strings are very good, loud and durable, very good intonation. So far I have only good experiences with them.  I believe the man used to work for Bernd Kürschner.

I'm sorry all my posts are for suppliers/manufacturers in the States, but it makes more sense for all of us to purchase supplies from our own side of the pond. A couple more on this side of the waters are:

This is Dan Larson's site. He manufactures gut strings. Of course Dan is also a first class luthier.

Labella, probably known more for their nylon strings, but they also make gut;
