Early Guitars and Vihuela

A network for historic guitars and vihuelas

I'm just really getting started on my newest build, which is a vihuela de mano. I'm in the New York City area, and have been trying to stick to local lumber. The instruments i've looked at online use pearwood for a number of parts, including the neck and headstock. I was considering using American Cherry for those parts, but in looking up its properties, found that they're very different from pearwood.

Is anyone aware of any good Northeastern USA substitutes for pear?

Thanks!

Why use a substitute? I have a supply from 1990 that was seasoned then.... I'm just outside of Woodstock,NYand have extra in my stash to sell. Call me William Kramer-Harrison 845-657-5864 or 657-8514
