I restore old parlor guitars for a living. My concept is to make cheap unplayable guitars a great instrument for any serious musician. I keep most of the look and feel, but transform the guitar to something much better than original with new bracing, a carbon rod in the neck, new frets and some other improvements to the tone and playability. I do like steel strings best on old "wrecks" from around 1920, Newtone Heritage 0.12 are great low tension strings.
I also do simple renovations on more valuable instruments, but I prefere to "do my thing" on cheap ones. They sound so much better when done...
