Early Guitars and Vihuela

A network for historic guitars and vihuelas

This is obviously a reversed frontispiece. It appears to be a copy (Amsterdam, Braakman, 1701) of the original frontispiece published in Paris in 1700, for a printed play, "Les Filles Errantes," in a collection of plays entitled "Le Theatre Italien de Gherardi, ou Le Receuil Generale de toutes les comedies et scenes francaises jouees par les Comediens Italiens du Roi pendant tout le temps qu'ils ont ete au service." My question is What should we think of the lute-like tuning heads on these guitars? Fact or artistic fiction?
