Maple was the prefered body material for guitars by both luthiers and players in the 19th century (Aguado even suggested that the entire body of the guitar be Maple, including the top). It seems following in the Violin tradition as the best tone wood. But other material was used as well. Brazilian Rosewood of course (usually thin veneer over spruce or maple for the back and solid sides), Fruitwood (Cherry, Apple...), Mahogany, Cypres, Lacewood and other exotics.

 

Many of the woods noted above found their way into the Stauffer Opus but mostly he/they (G.A & J.A Stauffer) favored Maple.

Nice! That birdseye maple looks nice and historical. What did the Stauffers use, mostly maple I guess?
