Early Guitars and Vihuela

A network for historic guitars and vihuelas

Parts of two labels, one placed on top of the other, have been removed from the instrument. The lower has the inscription '-nardo Rot-', and 'fecit Anno 1-'. The upper is mostly indecipherable apart from ---assi, and fece in (Firenze?) . It may have, or perhaps they are imagination!, off-prints of Spo- on its back, and the date 1800 bottom right-hand corner. In a list of Italian violin makers I discovered an 1824 violin by Bernardino Rotella of Spoleto. Unless the guitar-maker was a Leonardo, it seems very possible that he was Bernardo Rotella, and the uncle or father of Bernardino.

Yes, it is a tied bridge - slightly more basic than a lute bridge, without the shallow rebate that most lute bridges have.  There are some glue marks on the soundboard which suggest that there were moustachios at one time.
