Thank you Yuri!  And, you are exactly right!  I consulted Rob MacKillop and he pointed me to some drawings of Franz Schubert's guitar which clearly show a bit of ribbon tied to the little hole for the purpose of hanging the guitar on the wall.

maybe for a cord to hang it on the wall?

Numerous Romantic Period Guitars have a hole in the headstock between the 3rd and 4th pegs.  What is common understanding with regard to the purpose?  Is it a hole to attach a cord for the purpose of attaching a strap?  Thanks, Tom
