Early 19th century guitars often had an extra hole in the peg head. Once mechanical tuners became common then the hole for the strap or hanging the instrument, as Valery points out, was no longer needed. One almost never sees this feature on instruments with mechanical tuners. I've seen one or two but I could not rule out the possibility that either the tuners or the hole were a later addition.

It's interesting that your Remy has features from the era of the 5 course guitar. Like the angle of the peg head and it's ornate shape. Very cool.

I think the hole is just for the strap, or for hanging the guitar. Even if it is close to the time of 5 courses guitars (this guitar made by "Rémy" is from around 1800) it was not a five course transformed in 6 strings, but it was originally 6 strings.

I'm curious about the hole in the headstock.  Originally a 5-course?  Who's the maker?
