I am an expat British journalist living in Marin County, where I play the Renaissance lute, vihuela de mano, and Rose orpharion. Although my interests center on English and Spanish Renaissance music, I greatly enjoy the works of the early Italian masters and the lesser known compositions from Central Europe, especially Barkfark and his contemporaries. I also enjoy modern guitars, 12 strings, and even (gasp!) the Stratocaster.
Hi Marc! What a good news! Luciano told me about your vihuela. How nice is to receive a new instrument, isn't it? So have a nice "honeymoon"! keep in touch, regards!
Hi Roger: Thanks for your message. I've had the new vihuela for several weeks now and it's a fine instrument. The only modification I needed to make was the based end of the first wood fret was a tad high and caused the C and G courses to buzz when playing up the scale. I put an eraser under the strings, used a 100 grit emory board to take down the height of the fret a little, then finished the job with a very fine grit nail file to give the fret a smooth finish. And now there's no buzz, no problems -- just the joy of playing Narvaez and Milan (et. al.) on the instrument for which their composition were intended. As they say in Spanish, which is as close as I can come to Portuguese, "Estoy contento." Regards, Marc.
