He studied with Graciela Pomponio, Dolores Costoyas and Víctor Villadangos in Buenos Aires, where he obtained his Diploma in classical guitar. In 1994, he gained interest in early music, specializing on lute, theorbo, baroque guitar and thorough bass.
He studied this instruments with Eduardo Egüez, Dolores Costoyas, and Hopkinson Smith.
He has been playing theorbo, baroque guitar and lute with leading groups of Argentina, Uruguay and France as Ensemble Louis Berger (Latin American Baroque), Ensemble Elyma (Latin American and early Italian Baroque), Ensamble Sine Nomine (XVII Century Music with singers), De Profundis (choir from Uruguay), among others.
In 2000 he founded La Rosa Púrpura del Plata, devoted to Latin American Baroque music. In 2004, he founded “L’Accademia dei Filomusi” with Ana Paula Segurola, in Montevideo (Uruguay), and performed programs devoted to Latin American Baroque, and Early Italian Baroque.
Even as a soloist or as a continuo player, he has performed in concerts and recorded C.D.'s in Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, Bolivia, Italy, Germany, Holland, England, Switzerland and France (including 4 CD’s with Ensemble Elyma, 1 with Ensamble Louis Berger and 1 with La rosa púrpura del Plata) . He teaches classical guitar in Conservatorio Provincial Juan José Castro (Buenos Aires), and gives private lessons of lutes, baroque guitar, vihuela , theorbo and thorough bass. He is regular professor for graduate courses in Universidad de la República (Uruguay).

Hi, Gabriel: My chitarrone is indeed quite the handful, particularly in that I'm a shortish guy. It's a full-size Roman theorbo after Buechenberg; Praetorius illustrates one just like it, the rendering unambiguously indicating that it was, like mine, constructed with only single courses on the lower pegbox. The fretted courses' mensur is 89cm (the same as a Fender Jazz Bass), the diapasons' 160cm. Being an EMS made-in-Pakistan instrument that's more or less an economy/student model, it's not without some vexing quirks -- the action is problematic -- but it's serviceable (not least because it cost well under $2k new!), and I'm picking my way through Visee and Hurel on it with relatively little pain. A year into wrestling with it, I anticipate being reasonably presentable with about 10 solo pieces in about another six months (optimistically). There's not much call for continuo players in Atlanta, so I'm trying to pass as an amateur impresario and am striving to mount some M.-A. Charpentier choral pieces (the Messe des morts particularly) calling for a viol/organ/theorbo continuo group. Wish me luck! -- Best regards, K.McF.D.

Si, he participado en un par grabaciones con mi grupo de musica barroca La Fontegara y con Continuo, junto con un grupo aleman que se llama Los Otros, con ellos (nosotros y Los Otros) vamos a presentar el disco en octubre. Tambien en octubre hacen aqui un festival que se llama Cervantino y alli vamos a tocar un concierto con Hesperion XXI, creo que va a estar interesante. Este año ha estado para mi al reves que el tuyo: empezó a todo vapor, creo que toque mas conciertos en cinco meses que en 2007, y luego las actividades se acabaron... asi pasa.
Fui a la pagina que mencionaste pero no pude cargarla, algo sucedio....

En el disco que hicimos en alemania pusimos basicamente musica del codice saldivar 4 y del saldivar 2, para citara, en arreglos, o mas bien reconstrucciones, de Lee Santana. Este codice 2 es un ms. del xvii o algo asi y parece un cuaderno de apuntes, con piezas apenas dibujadas con unas pocas notas y acordes, asi que la musica se tiene re rehacer. Lee dice que le gusta mucho el disco, pero yo no lo he oido...
ya pude entrar a la pagina que mencionas y por supuesto me parece excelente. Tambien pude ver varios de los videos de youtube. Es terrible este youtube, casi nunca habia entrado, se puede uno pasar todo el dia viendo videos de cosas cada vez mas raras...
Yo no conecte el proyecto del cervantino, lo hizo mi colega Leopoldo y ya le escribi pidiendole la direccion de la gente del festival, en cuanto me la de te la paso. Lo de Morelia no me extraña, todo parece estarse cancelando en este pais, como te digo, yo empece a 100 por hora y luego todo se detuvo...

Hola. Lo interesante del saldivar 2 es que es para citara, un instrumento del que se sabe muy poco aun en españa para este periodo. Ademas parece tener un repertorio mas "mexicano" que "hispanico" en general: aparte de las usuales folias y pasacalles y pavanas, tiene piezas que se encuentran mencionadas en otras fuentes novohispanas, pero (creo) no en fuentes de otras partes del imperio español, como tocotines, puertorricos, chiqueadores, etc., y algunas piezas con nombres distintivamente mexicanos, como el guasteco. Lo malo es que la escritura solamente da un perfil melodico sin notacion ritmica y en ocasiones apenas unos cuantos acordes. Lee es compositor y muy imaginativo, asi que sus versiones (como suelo decir) reflejan tanto el contenido del codice como el talento creador de Lee...
Ya vi el CD a la venta en amazon de alemania, pero cuesta como 20 euros, lo que me parece un poco caro, ciertamente no lo voy a comprar....

El manuscrito de Manuel Álvarez tiene 10 folios en buena condición y uno o dos de los que no sobrevive nada utilizable. En algunas piezas la notación es muy precisa y en otras el ritmo está bastante mal anotado. Las piezas que coloqué son las de lectura más clara.

Hello Gabriel. Ning says you are supposed to be able to add a file (PDF or JPG, for example) to a text box by clicking on the "white page icon" at the top of a text box (where you would also see the Bold, Italic, Underscore, etc symbols). Then you would get a pop-up window to select the file for uploading on your own computer.
Unfortunately, when I tried to enter the text box on my page and upload another file, I do not see that "white page icon"--so I can't upload one myself!
I actually do see that icon in this Comment text box I'm typing into, but Comments eventually work their way off the visible part of a page -- not a good place to add it.
This problem may be Mac-related. When I first tried to upload using Safari I also did not get the "white page" upload icon, but I did get it using Firefox as a browser. I have written to the Ning Help desk, but they are very bust from the conversion to a paying model and I do not expect a quick reply.
