Early Guitars and Vihuela

A network for historic guitars and vihuelas

I haven't looked at EG&V for quite a while, but having done so, I noticed the number of people who have just gotten, or are soon getting, new instruments.

I received, just over two months ago, my new guitar -- by the Canadian luthier Daryl Perry, after a 1929 Simplicio (post-Torres, I blushingly admit, but I have played it with gut strings).

Just before I received it, I came across mention of a device called a "ToneRite" -- which had been endorsed by the likes of the Kronos Quartet -- and which claimed to radically accelerate the playing-in period of any new instrument. The company was very quick to answer a couple of questions I emailed them, so I took a chance & bought one.

This thing really works. You could literally hear day-by-day improvements in the responsiveness of the spruce. My teacher heard the guitar after I'd had it for a week, & said it sounded like it had been played for a thousand hours. The increase in the beauty of the sound is such that I'd recommend that anyone with a new instrument Google the company: their previous website had some sort of discussion of using the Tonerite on coursed instruments; this is missing on the new site, but I'm sure they'd respond to questions.
