Early Guitars and Vihuela

A network for historic guitars and vihuelas

Over on another guitar form someone asked a question concerning the use of Nomex composite tops on period style guitars. Modern guitar builder are using them to boost the volume on their instruments, and other reasons, but I've not come across any period instrument builders, except one Oud builder, that works with this newish technology.

I thought I'd see what the builders here might have to say about it and what the players would think if confronted with a Sellas, Panormo or Lacote copy  (term used loosely) that had a composite top.

Whatever side of the divide you fall, what has always worried me is how difficult these things are to repair. What exactly happens when the inside of the inner or outer skin comes unglued? Even if it's a mere seperation of 1 inch and it's causing an annoying buzz, what then?  Throw the instrument away? Very expensive repair - probably a new soundboard?

Then again I guess that some makers would probably say that this scenario could never happen. . .
