Early Guitars and Vihuela

A network for historic guitars and vihuelas

Hi

This guitar doesn't have any label, and I'm not sure how old it is, or where it was made. I would be interested if anyone knows where and when it might have come from?

Thanks

Ritchie

It has all the hallmarks of a first half of the 19th century Stauffer/Legnani early romantic guitar. However, the lack of a lable may suggest a clone/copy, of which there were many. If you are familiar with Eric Hofmanns Facebook page "Stauffer & Co." I'd post there. He is very knowledgable on the Viennese style guitars, their history, their makers and would recognize the subtle elements that could help give a better idea of the year and maker.

I can't find this Stauffer & co ..Eric Hofmann  on Facebook' page can you give me a but of help. Interesting post Richie

Sorry finally sussed it '&' was the bit I was doing wrong

Now a little later a very good site indeed and maybe of help to me also. thanks

Thanks Scot, I will try to contact Mr Hofmann. I was told it was probably c1900 so it is most likely a copy I guess.

Hi. I am pretty sure that this is the guitar that I bought on ebay about a year ago. Erik Hoffmann suggested that it is by C F Bauer, who apparently worked for Stauffer at about the same time as C F Martin.  I will post a picture of it as soon as I can get my computer to find it. Did you copy the pictures from ebay? If so it is definitely the same one.
