Arts Council of Princeton Presents Classical Guitarist Stanley Alexandrowicz on Saturday, Nov. 13, 2010
The Arts Council of Princeton presents internationally renowned classical guitarist Stanley Alexandrowicz in a recital on Saturday, November 13, 2010 at 8:00 PM at the Paul Robeson Center. A specialist in both 19th Century Romantic guitar music and Contemporary guitar works, Alexandrowicz will be performing the first half of the recital on a 10-string, double neck, 19th Century "period instrument" (as used by the great guitar virtuosi of that time). The second half will feature Contemporary works played on the modern classical guitar.
19th Century compositions by Ivan Padovec (Croatia) and Napoleon Coste (France) open the recital and include the former's Fantaisie Op. 20 (sur des motifs de l' opera "Norma" de Bellini), and the latter's Marche Funebre et Rondeau (dedicated to his wife). The second portion of the concert begins with Witold Lutoslawski's Melodie ludowe (Polish Folk Melodies-1945) arranged by the artist, and Vaclav Kucera's powerful Diario—Omaggio a Che Guevarra - 1971. Described by British composer and musical journalist John Duarte as a "musical-political" document, “recording five notional, critical days in the life of its eponymous, revolutionary hero," this work exploits the sonic possibilities of the modern classical guitar to their fullest. Works by Mexican composer Manuel Ponce close the recital. For more information, please visit www.stanleyalexandrowicz.com.
