Early Guitars and Vihuela

A network for historic guitars and vihuelas

I am trying to identify the attached illustration. Not sure if it is meant to be a vihuela or 5-course guitar.  It appeared on the cover of Lute 1996 but no-one can remember where it came from.

Hi,

that raised my curiosity as I thought I had seen this picture before but couldn't find it anywhere in my score ot tab books...

So I went for a reverse picture search on the internet, and by using three different methods (Google, Bing and Yandex), Yandex returned a Pinterest page containing this image, pointing at some other instagram page:

The side text let me search further and find the according page at the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art: https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/359076

I'm new member here, in fact I signed in just to tell you... I hope that helps, even if it's a relatively modern 19th century woodcut!

Edgar

Brilliant detective work.  Thank you very much for your help.

Bravo Edgar !

I too had this feeling of "déja-vu"" and immediately checked the front page of Narvaez "seis libros del delphin", just to find it features as well a similar siren playing a guitar or a vihuela, but not this one...
Good find anyways,

and welcome to the forum !
Cheers.
