Profile Information:

About me:
Alan Grundy was born in Dublin and began playing guitar as a teenager. His first serious guitar studies took him in the direction of jazz guitar, but after hearing a guitar recital by a leading Spanish guitarist he began a study of the classical guitar.

Alan has given many recitals in Ireland and throughout Europe and has represented Ireland at the Budapest Spring Festival and A Sense of Ireland Festival in Istanbul. In 1993 Donal Hurley (one of Ireland's leading composers) wrote "Homage to Segovia" - a sonata for solo classical guitar and dedicated it to Alan. On the occasion of the centenary of the birth of Andres Segovia, Alan gave the world premiere of this work to a capacity audience at the Hugh Lane art gallery in Dublin. Later that year he gave the Italian premiere in Rome, followed by the Hungarian premiere in Budapest in 1997, the French premiere in Paris in 1998 and the Turkish premiere in Istanbul in 1999.

Alan has broadcast on R.T.E. radio and television and hosted two programmes on the life of Segovia for lyric FM. He has also performed concerti, in particular with the R.T.E. Concert Orchestra at the National Concert Hall, his performance being broadcast live nation-wide on radio.

Since the mid 1990's Alan has been involved in research work into a collection of nineteenth-century guitar music known as the Hudelston Collection which is housed in the Royal Irish Academy of Music, Dublin. Alan presented a major performance and thesis based on works taken from this collection to the National University of Ireland, receiving an MA degree with honours in performance and musicology.

    Hello Alan,
if you ever want to extend your lute playing to duets, I'd be glad to make the trip south. I've lutes in E and G.
