I studied guitar with Tom Burmanje at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, and with Gordon Crosskey at the RNCM in Manchester. Masterclasses with Leo Brouwer and David Russell. I graduated as a musicologist in 2013, with a thesis on the composer Pauline Duchambge (1776-1858).
Currently I am working on a PhD about guitar culture in the 1700s (at the Uuniversity of Southampton, UK). I have published articles on guitar history in Early Music and TVNM.
I have been playing 19th century guitars for about 20 years now, after spotting & buying a lovely Mirecourt guitar at a local auction. I have been performing on gut strings, without nails, right from the start. Among other instruments, I own a ca 1830 Franz Brunner (Vienna), a ca 1855 D & A Roudhloff (London), and a Enrique Recio (Cadiz) from 1862.
As a performer, I mostly accompany singers, such as Christopher Kale, tenor, Sigurd van Lommel, altus and Valeria Mignaco, soprano. I teach guitar, lute and ukulele.
Hi Jelma, and welcome to the site. Have you made any soundfiles? I love 19th-C guitars with gut strings. I used to have a modern copy of a Panormo which I strung in gut. My student has it now, but I wish I still had it. There are too many guitars and not enough time.
Very nice indeed! Thanks for uploading it. There is something about those repeated chords that just pulls you in.
I went to your website and followed some links. Unfortunately I don't speak Dutch, but I did see that you also play theorbo and baroque guitar and have done many concerts. I hope to hear more of your files in the future.
Hello Jelma,
Thanks for asking! That is my 4-course Renaissance guitar built 2 years ago by Lucio Nunez in San Antonio, Texas (http://www.lucionunezguitars.com/). I named it "El Alamito", since the peg head top has the "Alamo" silhouette so ubiquitous in that region. String length is 54 cm., and Olav Chris Henriksen (Boston Catlines) designed a nice set of strings for it as an "A" instrument. I have it tuned to A=415, which gives it a nice combination of tone and feel.
When arriving at specs for the instrument, I wanted to get away from the "plinky" quality of so many Renaissance guitars, so I had Lucio build the depth to 7 cm. This extra air gives the instrument some extra fullness and considerable projection!
Hello . Sorry for my scholary English . This view is coming from The Cité de la Musique , in Paris , and it is a Bandora ( Barok Guitar bass , 10-strings , tuning ???) one of the three in France ( 2 in the same place , and 1 in Le musée des Arts Décoratifs , also in Paris ). I asked for looking them in August 2005( may be) at Joel Dugot , director , and I see in december (+/-) . The tuning is in an English book for Tr.viol , flute , tenor lute , cittern, bandora , and bass of viol . Copyright 1977 by The Musica Britannica Trust ,"Pieces from the Walsingham Consort Book ( 1588 ) " and " Rosseter's lessons for consort ( 1609 )"( modern notation , the tuning -6 curses- is also written at the beginning, in french tabulature ) . Double metallic strings :1° A3 , and you go down like a guitar . So 5° D1 , and down tune by tune 10° F ( but F-zero does-it exist ??? ) . If I can tell you more ....JBD
Hoi Jelma, complimenten voor je website en al die prachtige muziek!! Ik ben hier terecht gekomen via YouTube (video van Matthew mc Allister) groetjes Bram
Hi Jelma
Thank you so much for the link to the Renaissance guitar music and the information about the French Lute Society's book.
Very nice of you.
Jamie
Hello Jelma, I've made two new copies: a "facsimil" (very very close copy in woods and measures) and a "antiqued" copy (with simulated use marks ). The first have gut strings and the second nylgut strings. In the pictures you can see the original and copies. In the next few months I want to copy a Agustín Caro (Granada 1824) that a friend of mine wants to sell.
Regards.
Aarón.
Much obliged for welcoming me to this website Jelma. Glad to have access to the informations and helpful members. A happy new year to you and all who are here.
Thank You. I see, You where only joking. I'm allso proud to be a nerd. One should be careful with irony when writting.
I'm impressed with all the ensembles you play in. I'd like to play with some other instruments too. There's not many musicians in Denmark that plays historical instruments and the once that do is only into baroque music and I'm more into the early romantic period not only as a musician but allso as a historian. I read a lot a history book about late 18th till mid 19th century.
I'm happy that You like our video. I'm the one with the 19th century sideburns.
Very funny. I must admit though that I find most of the beards too much. I'm more into the kind of sideburns the men had in early 19th century, like the one Giuliani had.
Hello, and thank you very much for posting Krishnasol playing the Sabionari. I just dont know how to do that! I tried but i missed… I will post the repport of restoration on my web-site in a week…
Hallo Jelma. Yes I have a few of these arrangements, en know of the existence of some others. I am collecting Molino's music, so I hope to get a hold of those also sometimes.
