Early Guitars and Vihuela

A network for historic guitars and vihuelas

I have seen vihuelas strung both octave and unison on the 5th and 6th courses. I have read several articles on this and there does not seem to be a firm conclusion. Is this a matter personal choice? String choice?

Thank you

As you say there are several articles on the subject but very little evidence one way or the other so I guess it really is a matter of personal choice. It depends on whether you find the octave doubling intrusive in the counterpoint. Most player seem to stick with unison stringing for that reason.

Thank you.
