Early Guitars and Vihuela

A network for historic guitars and vihuelas

Dear Friends,

I play baroque lute for a couple of years as amateur. Now I want to add a baroque guitar to it.

My idea was to buy a ready instrument and the one that wouyld be already on the level I want it to be but it will take some time to save money for it.

Now I have a local luthier whose prices are musch lower than for EU or US luthiers - often not because it is so much worse but considering local market.

At the same time his instruments have certain disatvanges but considering low price and short terms and easy selling opportuninties I decided to take a chance to get some strater while saving money for a better one.

Since I tried other instruments of this luthier (both lutes and guitars) I can more or less see what disatvantages they have and now I want to possibly prevent it in my instrument by giving detailed instructions.

There are issues that I feel I need expertise for you...  all his instruments have dull attack - like 'locked' inside... I did all to make it brighter but some issues are still open

1) his instruments are equipped with mapple - sometimes rosewood - bridges...  I want to make sound as bright as possible - so from mys experience on jazz archtops ebone bridge gives brighter sound of all... but archtop is much more heavier a guitar .. and maybe ebony is too dence for light baroque top? What would be your recomendations?

2) his bridges are very high - almost twice as high as any lute I have seen. Is it regular for baroque guitar?

3) at the 12th fret his baroque guitars have 4,5 mm heigh (like on classics) but when I played double-stringed course at high positions it was inconvimient (I have experience with lute and know how it works) - so is it regular for baroque guitar? What could be the recomendation? I know lowre haight will effect the volume but it is not the issue for me at the moment

If you have any otehr ideas it will be musch appreciated

Thank you very much in advance

Kind regards
